Answer Supervision-Line Side (AS-LS) - V8.0
Product Description
Answer Supervision-Line Side (AS-LS), an Open Network Architecture (ONA) product, functions on outgoing calls placed by the end-user on an IntraLATA basis.
AS-LS provides the capability to deliver on-hook (idle) and off-hook (in use) supervisory signals from the terminating Central Office (CO) to a line interface (Customer Premise Equipment (CPE)) at the originating end of the call.
DMS-10 and DMS-100 CO switches and 5ESS® CO switches use a battery reversal method to provide the AS-LS signaling. The electrical signal is sent to the calling station indicating the called party has answered the call. The CO switch provides battery reversal on the talk pair when the called party has answered the incoming call and this battery reversal condition continues for the duration of the call.
This feature may be used by terminal equipment (Private Branch Exchange (PBX), pay telephone, call diverter, and other compatible types of Customer Provided Equipment (CPE)) connected to the calling line to determine that the call has been answered.
The disconnect timer returns the line to an idle or normal state upon termination of the call by the called party. This timer provides the only indication to the originating end that the called party has terminated the call. This disconnect timer has a lengthy time-out interval and is not affected by the provisioning of AS-LS on the line. This interval may be too long when used with equipment that may depend on short intervals.
To provide end-to-end continuity, the line equipped with AS-LS (the calling party) must be provisioned over metallic facilities (loops).
Metallic facilities:
- May be loaded or non-loaded
- May have a resistance zone of 1500 to 2800 ohms (this zone is computed by using the distance from the CO and the size of wire the service is provided on) and will normally require a range extension devise for battery boost and transmission gain. Most loops of this length already have this device in place and will not need to be added to provision AS-LS.
AS-LS can not be disabled on a call by call basis.
AS-LS is available with:
- All Basic Public Access Lines (PAL), e.g. Resale Basic PAL
- Certain Feature Group A (FGA) services
- All Non-designed PBX trunks, e.g. Resale PBX
- Single party non-designed Business and Residence Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), e.g. Resale POTS or CenturyLink Local Services Platform™ (CLSP™) Business and Residential
AS-LS is not available with the following services:
- Any type of exchange access service utilizing a "trunk side" interface
- Coin Line or Smart PAL Service
- Designed services such as Foreign Exchange Service, Foreign Central Office Service or designed PBX trunks.
- Direct Inward Dial (DID) Trunks

(1) Loop start only
(2) Any optional features provisioned on the trunk will not function after the battery reversal signal is received.
(3) A special line card is necessary for generation of the AS-LS (line reversal). The NT6X18AB standard line type card and NT2X8AD line card can produce the AS-LS line reversal signal.
When calls are placed to 0, 0+, or 911:
5ESS | DMS-10 and DMS-100 |
An immediate false AS-LS signal is returned as soon as Operator or 911 is dialed. | A signal, real or false, may or may not be returned depending on the specific office configuration. |
Unless the CPE is equipped with polarity guard, the touchtone pad will be disabled when the AS-LS battery reversal signal is received. Applications which require signals to be provided via a touchtone pad after the call has been answered will not be possible for the end-user unless their CPE contains the polarity guard feature.
