QWEST FOUNDATION DONATES $10,000 TO ALBUQUERQUE HISPANO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Grant to Benefit Barelas Job Opportunity Center’s Bilingual Web Wizard Project

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., May 30, 2008 –The CenturyLink Foundation announced today a $10,000 grant to the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce (AHCC) Barelas Job Opportunity Center (BJOC) to further its bilingual Web Wizards Project. Since 2003, the CenturyLink Foundation has granted $80,000 to the project.

The AHCC/BJOC Web Wizards Project will collaborate with two elementary schools in the Albuquerque Public School District to provide Web site capabilities, Web master training and technical assistance for teachers to develop and keep the new site current and interesting.

”The CenturyLink Foundation has a long history of supporting the AHCC and its outstanding education programs,” said Loretta A. Armenta, CenturyLink president for New Mexico. “Education is a key to the future for New Mexico, and the Hispano chamber is unlocking doors to that brighter tomorrow. The CenturyLink Foundation supports the Web Wizards Project and is pleased to be a part of the AHCC team.”

“The CenturyLink Foundation recognizes that information is a critical step toward increasing parental involvement.  At the same time, technology provides schools with fast and reliable ways to get important information out to parents—whether it’s a student’s grade on the latest test or news about an upcoming parent meeting,” said Alex O. Romero, AHCC president and CEO. “We thank the CenturyLink Foundation for having the vision that will make a lasting difference and appreciate their partnership in this project.”

The Web Wizards Project will also train parents to use a new Web site to learn more about their children’s school, activities and achievements, as well as the volunteer and governance opportunities at the school. This project opens up the AHCC computer lab to train parents to access the Internet, school and classroom information, to e-mail teachers, access newsletters, get access to student information and to learn ways to assist in their children’s learning via the Web.
